WAIT IT’S TIME TO GET A LITTLE SERIOUS despite the fact that I just prefaced the whole message with Courfeyrac crossing like… seven lines of decency and hygiene… but really, it’s time to get a little serious! (Sorry about the earlier messages that I haven’t replied to yet, but I wanted to clear this up as soon as possible–) I think that anyone who judges another fan merely by what point in time or through what work they stepped into the fandom should be taken outside and summarily SHOT. That’s obnoxious! We’ve all been new to pre-established fandoms at least once in our lives, I’m sure, and found that sort of territorial behavior to be off-putting at best! If I’m wary of any type of fannish stance at all, personally, it wouldn’t have to do with newness but with a willingness to engage. To cut to the chase: I don’t think it really matters if a person in the LM fandom hasn’t read the Brick yet. So what if someone didn’t have the time or the inclination or the chance to read a book before an arbitrary cinematic release date? That shouldn’t matter! But if someone watches the Tom Hooper movie, decides that they want to get fannish about it, and then acts like they invented the LM fandom from scratch while simultaneously ignoring the existence of other canon materials and several years’ worth of fandom output– in my opinion, that would be a problem. What I believe is that we have no obligation to be already familiar with canon or fanon before we dip our toes into a fandom: but that as a member of a fandom, we do have every obligation to be eager and willing to learn about all the parts of the fandom that we are not already familiar with. “I haven’t read the Brick yet” is not a bad thing in the slightest, but “I don’t care about the Brick and I don’t care about the musical and the only fandom trends that matter are ones that were invented post-2012” seems to be… a pretty bad thing. If that sounds like a straw man, that’s because it probably is! I would never look down on new fans for being new, anon. And if I reference things that are not quite so recent as the 2012 movie, I do it not out of antagonism or possessiveness, but out of a sense of nostalgia. Basically I think that the bare minimum requirement for us to be members of a fandom is the desire to consume the material that the fandom is built around. That’s all! (As for the Musketeers bit, I meant it in large part as a reminder for myself, because I’ve never been in the TTM fandom and I’m very rusty with the books– and I didn’t want to be frantically negotiating thousands of pages of prose while also trying to keep up with regular TV episodes. What if the spirit moves me and I want to write fic NOW NOW NOW, but I can’t remember what happens to the characters after the events of the most recent episode?!) Phew that was an unwieldy response– I hope it made sense and I hope you no longer doubt that I love you, even though I cannot show it by jizzing all over you :’( -- source link
