Here are six questions that will help you understand which professional path to take.What is lifestyle? It’s a combination of time and money. If you would like to have a travel lifestyle, you’ll need a certain amount of time away from the office. Perhaps your job needs to offer flexible work hours in this case. Or you could work four 10-hour days instead. Once the time aspect is figured out, you need to address the income side of things.You need a certain amount of money if you want to travel regularly. You can choose to sacrifice your time for a few years to save more money, or you might want to prioritise chasing your passion and dreams.Wondering what this means? Imagine that you’re a professional athlete but you’re competing against elementary school children. Sure, you’ll win every match but will you feel fulfilled? Probably not.It’s important to choose a career that allows you to build new skills, become more educated, and expand your knowledge.As you grow in your career, hard tasks will become easy. This isn’t an issue until there are no more challenges. If you’re not being challenged, you’re going to remain on the same spot until something changes. Make sure your career is constantly challenging you and allowing you to grow.You may be tempted to rely on promotions or raises as a way to see growth but don’t be fooled. You may even be promoted to the highest position in the company and still not feel fulfilled or that you’re growing. This feeling doesn’t come from your position or paycheck - it comes from that tingle and happiness in your chest when you get to work.Strange question? Probably, yes. What does it mean, though?Most career demand more than the love for the money they bring you. If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, chances are you’re not going to give your fullest and your best.“Would I do it for free?” is a good question to ask yourself because it forces your mind to rationalise things. If you can think of a career that you wouldn’t mind doing for free, that’s likely to be your true passion and the one career where you’d be truly happy.Obviously, if you do make a career on it, you’ll be paid for it - win-win situation!There’s plenty of information about choosing a career based on your personality type. The Holland Theory of Career Choice states:(…) There are six key categories that define the modern worker. (…) Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.”For example, if you’re the Enterprising type, you’re most likely to lead and persuade. As a result, you’d excel as a sales manager or an attorney.Obviously, choosing a career may or may not have an impact on where you live.If you’d like to work on the stock market, for example, you’ll surely find yourself living in New York. Or if you’d like to work for big tech companies, Silicon Valley would probably be your best bet, as Hollywood would be the best fit if you were to pursue the entertainment industry.Knowing what you want your career to be and where you want to live goes hand-in-hand. If you’d prefer to stick to your family or friends, you will have to limit yourself to the career opportunities closer to that area.If you’re one of the lucky ones, who knows you can have your dream career and live on your dream place as well.Don’t forget, however, that your answers to these questions will change as life continues. You will grow as a person and your goals will change.
