Double Check(Story Post)Dax was called in again the next day for a follow up. Sydryn had called him the day before but when he arrived, it was Dr Gardi that was seeing him that day.“Reid. Good morning,” Dax said as the doctor came into the ultrasound room. “What a surprise!”Reid nodded. “Aye, Syd’s your usual doctor, I ken. However, they’re taking a day off today.”“Oh,” Dax said. “Are they alright?”“Aye, yes. But today, I’ll be taking good care of you,” Reid assured smiling. “You trust me?”“Of course. I trust you with my partner and children, anyhow,” Dax nodded.“I know, only joking. Only joking…” Reid washed his hands and put his gloves on. “So, can you hop up there on the table and lie down, please?”“Yes.” Dax did as told. “This is just to check up on the whole uterus situation, right?”“Precisely. Shirt up and tuck.” Reid turned on the ultrasound machine and got it ready. “This’ll be cold.”Dax lifted his shirt and braced for the cold. Reid squeezed some gel onto his stomach, pressed the wand into it, and began moving it down and around, looking for the right angle.“Dr Aias said I would ‘pass’ it within about a month,” Dax said. “Could you explain what that involves?”“I could. Only matters really if you’re not pregnant,” Reid said.“Oh, well you know my test was negative and I haven’t been sexually active since,” Dax assured.“Always have to double check, you know,” Reid said as he pressed into one side of Dax’s stomach. He paused there and fiddled with the machine for a clearer image. “And as suspected, you are pregnant.”Dax blinked. The doctor had said it so fast; he hadn’t had time to register. “Désolé. Say again?”“You’re pregnant.” Reid turned the monitor towards Dax and circled the image of his uterus. “You see right here… There’s a wee baby.”Dax shook his head. “No, I… Dr Aias cleared me.”“I suspect what is known as the hook effect, which effectively means your body was producing too much human chorionic gonadotropin and the test was overwhelmed into a false negative,” Reid said. “I figure that Prilarian drug has something to do with it.”Dax blanked for a moment. “…It can’t be.”“Does this sound familiar? Fatigue. Nausea. Mood swings. A little bit of weight gain.” Reid patted Dax’s stomach cheerfully.Dax put his hand to his forehead. “Yes, but I… What about Nathan?”“I imagine, you both could be pregnant right now,” Reid explained. “It’s a little exciting, isn’t it?”“No!” Dax pulled down the hem of his shirt. “We only did the IVF because I wasn’t pregnant! Now, you’re saying I am?!”“You saw the screen,” Reid said, tapping the monitor where he’d frozen the image. “But don’t panic! You know, you still have options. And, who knows? Maybe the IVF didn’t take.”Dax sat up and pulled out his phone. “I have to talk to Nathan…”“Good idea. We should all discuss going forward from here,” Reid suggested.“I’d like to talk to him alone, actually,” Dax said getting up. “No offense.”“None taken. You want to talk to your partner. I understand,” Reid insisted.“Can I go?” Dax asked. “I gotta go…”Reid opened his arms. “Feel free. We can book you another appointment soon for a check-up. Talk to Köbi.”Dax nodded. “Right. Yeah… Alright. Um, bye Reid.”“See you soon, lad,” Reid said, starting to remove his gloves.Dax didn’t respond and just left in a hurry.Reid sighed and went back to his office to find out who his next patient would be. It was going to be a long day. He hoped Sydryn would be back to work the next day, be he had a feeling it would be a while… -- source link
