Performance Evaluation(Story Post)“Gardi, will you join me for a moment?”“Sure thing.”Sydryn was taking lunch in their office when Reid had passed by the door. It was just their luck as they were prepared to go find the other doctor for this discussion.“How would you rate your performance over the last month?” Sydryn asked as Reid took a seat across from them.Reid frowned. “This feels like some kind of trap, but 10/10, would physician again. Five stars.”Sydryn sighed. “This isn’t a trap. Since returning from your accident, your performance has improved steadily. My only concern currently is your blatant display of favouritism.”Reid put his arm on Syd’s desk and leaned on it. “Favouritism? How so?”“Even before your accident, it is apparent that you took better care of certain patients than others, namely Mr. Cassidy.”“Well, Nathan is my friend,” Reid said. “And his case was so tragic in the beginning. I wanted to do my best to help him.”“That would be all well and good if you had extended as much care to all of your patients. However, I found you under-performed a little with others, namely Mr. Ferrer. His case should have been handled by APID from the start as there was enough evidence for extraterrestrial involvement and the personal distress this caused could have been avoided,” Sydryn stated.“I will accept that more in depth research may have helped, but I couldn’t find a way to spin a human having a human baby as being covered under our care here,” Reid said. “I don’t have the same kind of influence on the board that you have here, and Camilo’s family doctor very capable.”“We can go over the details of that case at another time. We are looking at your work,” Sydryn redirected. “Now, I left this practice in your care for several months and it resulted in myself having to return early due to your own negligence of your own health. Considering my current condition, I may have to take more extended time off, and I need to know that you will be able to take over in that time once more. Currently, I need convincing.”Reid nodded. “I understand. It’s not easy measuring up to a literal dragon, but I will do my best.”Sydryn nodded slowly. “As for your condition following our most recent examination and testing, you appear to be mostly recovered. Aoife hasn’t reported anymore lapse in memory, but she has indicated ‘very active dreams’. Would you like to elaborate on that?”“No.”“No?”“Well, they’re mostly sexual in nature involving one or more of our mutual acquaintances… I could tell you, but I think you’d be happier if I spared you the details.”The dragon sighed. “Alright… Well, I still advise that you continue to eat properly, no driving, and get full regular hours of sleep. No night shifts or evening shifts beyond 9pm. No practising medicine off the clock, emergencies excepted.”“Then you’ll have to take over for Nathan’s insemination should the first not take,” Reid stated.“What insemination?” Sydryn asked.“For Nathan and Dax. They want a baby,” Reid said. “We’re trying IVF while the wolf’s in heat.”“And you didn’t think to tell me about this?” Sydryn said. “Have you considered the ethics of inseminating someone in animal form with human sperm?”“Not even a little, no,” Reid said plainly.“Do you hear yourself?” Sydryn asked.“Nathan isn’t an animal and if he was, you would’ve said ‘animal’ and not ‘someone in animal form’. Frankly, I think the ethical issue would really be denying him the option to reproduce with his partner of choice when we already allowed his reproduction with an unchosen partner,” Reid stated. “Dax and Nathan are both consenting human adults. I wasn’t assisting the insemination of an animal. I was assisting the insemination of a person.”Sydryn took a long sigh. “Fine. I still would like to be informed when you perform unorthodox procedures. I am concerned about how soon this is happening following Mr Olivier’s own brush with pregnancy.”“Well, yeah, he did indicate it having some influence on them trying to have a baby,” Reid said. “I’m still quite surprised he’s not pregnant… You’ve never seen Kent, but that man looks like he could knock me up with just a glance.”Sydryn rubbed their forehead, not really asking for that colourful description. “I also expected a positive result, however I still don’t fully understand the properties of this Prilarian chemical he ingested. It may have been designed more specifically for Jeffrey, considering it’s failure on both his cousin and Dax.”“Oh, that makes sense,” Reid considered. “I would’ve expected the hook effect.”Sydryn paused for a moment. “What?”“The hook effect?” Reid repeated. “You know, when the hCG levels are so high that the test can’t handle it and comes back negative?”Sydryn growled. “I know what the hook effect is!”Reid’s eyes widened. “You did test them twice, right? You took it into consideration?”Sydryn stood up suddenly. “Stay here.”Reid shook his head. “Relax, it’s just a bit of an oversight.”“I don’t make oversights!” Sydryn stated. “Stay here!”Reid patted the desk. “Staying here.”Without another word, Sydryn stormed off.Reid sighed and drummed his fingers on the desktop. “I’m sure it’s fine…” -- source link
