Have some wholesome single dad!Logan and small-for-his-age toddler!Virgil. Edit: I was a freaking dummy and forgot to say that the idea for the butterfly hoodie/onsie was from @wisepuma23 and you should go spam them with love for how cute it is! Mini fic below the cut because it got longer than I anticipated. “PAPA! PAPA!” Logan tiredly looked up from hanging up the blankets to dry as he heard Virgil calling, in time to see him toddle up to him as quick as those chubby little legs could manage. “What is it Virgil?” He asked and couldn’t help the smile that stretched across his face as he saw him bouncing in the tiny butterfly hoodie he wore like a second skin. Big giant brown eyes stared up at him in awe and excitement and Logan’s heart crumbled a little. “Did you find something special?” “BUWFWY!” Virgil bounced and only paused a moment as he grabbed the little folded wings where he could reach them, and held them up like he was flying. “Pwetty buwfwy!”“A pretty butterfly?” Logan re-enunciated to help reinforce the correct pronunciation, but he couldn’t help it as he grinned ear to ear and knelt, catching the waddling toddler in his hands and letting him squirm in excitement. “Wiggwing!” Virgil chirped, his struggles enhanced by his sheer joy and excitement of the matter. The aching weight of sleep deprivation weighed heavily on Logan’s shoulders but even he could not deny that the enthusiasm was contagious. “Ah, a wiggling butterfly, just like you then?” Logan pecked large kisses to Virgil’s cheeks, unable to resist the temptation. He was just so pudgy and adorable and soft! Virgil squealed at the kisses and thrashed through his giggling and Logan let him go at last, following his excited motions towards the grass a little ways away with his eyes. “See? SEE? SEE!” He hopped excitedly and plopped down in the grass, transfixed a moment. Where he got all this energy, Logan would never understand, and he followed him to where he sat. He laid down in the grass a little behind Virgil and scanned the greenery. The sun was warm on his back and he sighed, feeling the weight of sleep threatening to take him. He was so tired, maybe just a little nap? But he knew he’d never get any rest even in the middle of nowhere so long as Virgil was with him and his attention was focused on making sure he didn’t wander too far. Maybe if he told him it was nap time, Virgil would lie on his stomach and sleep in the sun-kissed grass. He shifted his gaze and looked at the flower Virgil was so deeply intrigued with. Atop it sat a swiftly chewing caterpillar that munched away voraciously. Logan cast a look towards his son and saw the other bounding even as he sat. He looked like he was torn between reaching to touch it and leaving it alone, and the concentration he was displaying upon weighing the issues was inspiring. Logan loved how deeply intelligent Virgil was. He never thought being a parent would surprise him so much, nor did he ever think children Virgil’s age could be so darned intelligent. It was like a world of intrigue up in his little head. He asked so many questions and made so many choices. Perhaps, Logan thought, Virgil is different than other children. Perhaps he is genius level. Perhaps I am thinking too much and need to nap. “There is some confusion on your part little one.” He said finally with fondness as he heard Virgil continue to chant ‘buwfwy’ over and over. Virgil had only just learned the world for butterfly and Logan guessed he was assuming every new insect and arachnid he discovered was a butterfly thusly. Logan moved to gently run his hand up to push Virgil’s hood back up so the bouncy little antennae bobbed cutely as he moved. Virgil remained transfixed regardless of the motion, and his gaze never wavered even as Logan re-situated himself. “That right there is a caterpillar, Virgil.” “Cawpiwer?” Virgil might have had trouble pronouncing his R’s and his L’s but he was a very quick learner and caught onto words like it was the easiest thing in the universe. Logan admired how quickly he could hear a word and understand it with a visual cue and repeat it (even though the pronunciation and sometimes syllable count was off, he was trying and that was what was important).“Yes a caterpillar,” Logan explains, “turns into a butterfly after it eats a whole bunch of leaves and petals and spends time in a cocoon. You could sort of call this… a baby butterfly.” Virgil’s eyes finally turned to Logan and they were huge and excited along with his grin. “Baby buwfwy!” He clapped and stood and Logan watched all that energy go to waste again as he twirled around in the grass and came back, patting Logan’s face and sitting back down to look at it once more. “Buwfwy, papa!” Logan merely chuckled and watched the fuzzy, plump little caterpillar go, amused by how it did not even care that the two of them were watching. “Eventually, Virgil.” He assured him. “It’ll be a butterfly just like you.” Virgil giggled and it seemed his energy finally ran out. He crawled a little closer and sat, playing with Logan’s hair a moment and babbling in a mix of coherent speech and non-coherent babble. It would never get old feeling his pudgy little fingers play with his hair and his glasses as he talked. It almost ached hearing him. He loved Virgil so much that when he thought of how long it took to adopt him, when he thought of all they went through and all they were still going through, his heart filled with too many emotions for him to process. He grabbed him by the sides and rolled over, lifting Virgil into the air. Virgil laughed and held his arms out like a little Macy’s Day balloon and Logan laughed right along with him. The action took his hood off again but it just meant that the wind ruffled through Virgil’s soft dark hair. “Macy’s balloon!” Logan called and Virgil squealed. “Flying high in the sky!”Logan brought him back to sit on his stomach and smiled fondly at him, his hand threading into Virgil’s hair. The toddler leaned into it and yawned at last. Logan felt a pang of something he couldn’t put a name to course through him at that and he drew Virgil close and held him protectively, cradling his head in his much bigger hand. Logan checked his watch and realized it was about 2pm. Thank goodness, any more time and Logan might have fallen asleep without meaning to.“Nap time, Virg.” He said softly and kissed the top of his head as he sat up, stood and let Virgil down. “Let’s make a tent!” He grabbed one of the slightly-wet blankets and let Virgil help carry it with him. Yeah it would get a little dirty but a bit dirt never killed anyone, right? (Statistically Logan was sure that was not the case but he was willing to compromise for the sake of keeping them both from a sunburn and subsequent increased risk of skin cancer). He created a makeshift tent out of one of the lower hanging branches of an old tree and rocked the edges down. Virgil of course was most helpful in bringing small stones and testing the inside of the tent by crawling inside to make sure it was adequate for them to use. Logan popped his head inside the tent and found it was cooler inside so neither would overheat (a concern he had specifically as Virgil did not want to remove his butterfly hoodie). Speaking of Virgil, he was sitting in the centre of the tent wiggling his feet and had popped the sleeve of his hoodie into his mouth to chew on it. Logan inwardly groaned- he needed to wash this thing one of these days when Virgil slept. Virgil looked tired though and yawned again, holding his arms up and making grabby hands as big tears began to pool in his eyes. “Don’t worry Virgil, I’m right here.” Logan knew Virgil grew very upset and clingy when he was tired. He pulled him into his arms gently and kissed the top of his head as he sat down in the tent against the grass at the base of the tree and held him close to him. Virgil tucked neatly into his arms, curling up as if he belonged there; a perfect fit. He was completely contented as he chewed his hoodie until he fell asleep and Logan felt like the luckiest dad in the universe. They could nap together for a while in peace andforget about all the worries the world threw at them. Right in that moment it was just Logan, Virgil, the sun, the tent and the grass and that was all that mattered. -- source link
