“CAESAR IMPERATOR”Used here essentially to say “Emperor”From the British satirical magazine Punch. A slave (presumably since this was published in 1861 and Lincoln didn’t issue the Emancipation Proclamation until 1863) presides as “emperor” over a gladiatorial combat between North and South, who are identifiable by the flags on their shields.
