BLESS YOU. YOU STRONG FIERCE WOMAN.This is fucking brilliant. The lines that are so obviously aimed at him, this is so greatI appreciate what Lily was trying to do — people need to call out Robin Thicke’s bullshit and the general misogyny and sexist double standards in pop culture. The lyrics and message are sufficiently progressive (I could do without “bitch” and “pussy”), however, Lily’s video is extremely problematic. She’s essentially uplifting white women by standing on black women’s bodies. Robin Thicke, in Blurred Lines, exercised his male privilege by objectifying white women (iirc, there was one black woman in the video…I didn’t watch it more than once) — he was fully clothed, while the mostly white women were basically naked. Here, Lily Allen seems to be calling out sexism, but only as it applies to white women, because in the video linked above, she exercised her privilege as a white woman by objectifying black women. Lily was completely covered in the video, except for a few spots on her arms and upper chest where the fabric was more sheer, while the mostly black women were in much more revealing clothing and their bodies were subject to extended close ups of just their gyrating groin or buttocks (there may have been two white women who didn’t receive very much focus…almost as if they were there as “token whites” in the background so that using black women in this way wouldn’t raise as many red flags). To add insult to injury, these black women are further objectified by having alcohol poured on them and then having their butts smacked (at least once by a laughing Lily), while they dance. It’s particularly telling because theoretically, that kind of thing is supposed to be exactly what Lily is railing against in the song…but apparently it’s only a problem if white men treat white women that way. But as long as people of all races and genders are objectifying and commodifying black women it’s totally cool. This is why non-intersectional movements are so problematic, because fighting racism will only mean protecting men of color and fighting sexism only means protecting white women and women of color and the injustices committed against us continue to be invisible. Jesus Christ thank youThis video is so racist and guess whatStill misogynistic -- source link
