mary-aisha: Depeche Mode private(4) Andrew Fletcher“In the past I was an incorrigible pessimist”“Whenever I see my sisters Susan and Karen leaving for the factory each morning, I’m very glad to be a musician.” says Andrew Fletcher. “And yet, there was never any indication that I would end up in the popbiz.” Depeche Mode’s most taciturn member talks about his marvelous world.Avid collectorsOn stage, you are the most quiet one. Are you like this in private as well?Yes, as a child I wasn’t exuberant either. I was a boyscout, but they didn’t make a lot of use of me. Besides, I was an incorrigible pessimist, who never saw the bright side of life. What was your most important hobby in those days?Reading. Especially books about history. I was convinced I was going to become a teacher some day.Who changed you?Martin Gore. He really is what you can describe as my antipole, but precisely because of that, we get along so well. Without him, I would probably spend all my saturday evenings watching TV. He always manages to get me out of my lazy chair to go to a comfy pub or a nice discotheque.Do you spend your holidays together too?Yes. Last year we both went deepsea diving in the Indian Ocean during our holiday. An incredible experience. We’re also both avid collectors of old toys. We often go nosing about in second hand shops together too.Do you have a steady girlfriend?Yes. Her name is Grainne and she is Irish. She studies biology and physiology at university. She want’s to become a X-ray-assistant just like her mother. At night we meet. We only go out rarely, but we have endless conversations about a million subjects. That doesn’t mean it’s always boring.Does she come along on tour?A: Mostly. I’m very fond of that, because it’s an excellent way to get rid of boredom on the tourbus.Do you have a lot of friends in Depeche Mode’s entourage?Yes, but it’s striking that most of them are girls. As a child I could always get on a lot better with girls than with boys. The most fun girl of the entourage is Jane Spiers. She is a very competent technician and takes care of the lightshow, the stage robots and the movable parts on stage. She also likes to have a bit of fun, however. The two cooks are very nice too.Do you, despite the overwhelming success, still have a secret wish?I would love to make a European trip with Grainne. Even if it was to just see with my own eyes the historical cities that I have read so much about. But as long as Depeche Mode’s success keeps going on like this, the only sights of a town I’ll ever see will be the concert venues and the hotel rooms, I’m afraid. -- source link
