From Russia with Lust: Tsar Alexander II (1818 – 1881) and Ekaterina Dolgoruk
From Russia with Lust: Tsar Alexander II (1818 – 1881) and Ekaterina Dolgorukova, Princess Youriesvki (1847–1922)Tsar Alexander II met his future mistress and second wife when she was nine years old while staying at her parents’ house. In the 1860s, after her father’s death, the noble Muscovite family was left in financial ruin (Katya’s father mismanaged their fortune). The Tsar made Katya and her sister Maria his wards; He sent them to the Smolny Institute to be educated. The affair between Katherine and Alexander began in earnest when she was around nineteen years of age, and he was forty-eight. Alexander periodically took the time to visit his wards at the Institute. These visits grew more frequent as Katya became older and more attractive. She moved out of Smolny and into her brother’s house in Saint Petersburg two years before graduation.Their relationship lasted 14 years. It was Alexander’s last great passion. There are thousands of letters between him and Katya attesting that this “red hot” passion went both ways. Most of the letters are stored in the Moscow State Archives; seven were auctioned in Cologne in 2007 and are now owned by a French aristocrat; twenty-two were auctioned in New York in 2016. The pair frequently wrote to each other (several times a day) and were quite frank about the physical aspects of their relationship. Alexander emerges from these letters as a highly sexed but romantic man. The intensity of Katya’s desire for him and her explicit manner is a perfect match for his. Let us take a peek at what this couple said to each other in their letters.General facts about the correspondence:They numbered all their letters and never signed their names; they used “With you always” to sign off their letters. They had code words for certain aspects of sex: "Bingerle" is their euphemism for love-making (coined by Katya.) The French word “jouissance” is their code for sexual climax. They both had exuberant libidos, but their unique circumstances meant they never lost the frenzied passion of new lovers. The following are a few examples of what they said to each other through the years.Alexander to Katya:“I’ll never forget what happened on the sofa in the mirrored room when we kissed on the mouth for the first time, and you made me go out while you removed your crinoline, and I was surprised to find you without your pantaloons.”Alexander to Katya:“Oh, oh quel horreur? I was almost mad at this dream, but it was real… I felt a frenzy. That’s when I encountered my treasure… I would have given everything to dip inside again… I was electrified that your saucy crinoline let me see your legs that only I had ever seen.”Alexander to Katya:Over the New Year, the emperor, 60 and weary, celebrated with Katya. “I’m still steeped in our delicious bingerles last night,” he wrote on January 1, 1879.Alexander to Katya:“I confess these memories reawaken my rage to plunge inside your delirious coquillage again,” he would write. “I’m smiling about it, I’m not ashamed, it’s natural!” He was delighted when she took the initiative. “I enjoyed until delirium,” wrote the emperor, “lying still on the sofa while you moved on me yourself… we’re made for each other and I see you before my eyes, now in bed, now without knickers.”Katya to Alexander:. “I am expecting to make love three times tomorrow,” writes Katherine in a letter to the Tsar dated 1871. She goes on to describe, in remarkably free terms, how she was preparing to sleep with the Russian emperor. “I want to drink your juices,” she says.Katya to Alexander:“You know I want you. I feel overwhelmed by pleasure incomparable to anything else. I took pleasure like a mad thing under our dear blanket. This pleasure has no name, as we are the only ones who feel it.”Katya to Alexander: “I saw in your eyes that you wanted to throw yourself at me to forget everything and enjoy our bingerle.”In a 28-page missive she reminds the Tsar that she is pregnant and urges him: “not to dare have any bad ideas and to remain untainted … for I know you are capable in one moment when you want to make it (bingerle), to forget that you desire only me, and to go and make it (bingerle) with another woman.” (some sources say that Alexander had a very brief affair with Katya’s sister at the beginning of their relationship.)Katya to Alexander:“This evening, I want you,’ and by the following morning: ‘I slept restlessly, everything inside me trembles, I can’t wait till 4.45.”A sketch of nude Katya, penned by Alexander, was found in one of the letters. It is included below.Sources:Sebag Montefiore.
