“Glad To Be Gay” pinback, London, c. 1976. This button inspired Tom Robinson to write the militant and furious “Glad To Be Gay,” the first popular gay protest song. Although the song attacked institutionalized homophobia (“The British police are the best in the world/I don’t believe one of these stories I’ve heard/‘Bout them raiding our pubs for no reason at all”), Robinson directed his most intense vitriol at members of the gay community who refused to fully commit to the cause of gay liberation: “Lie to your workmates, lie to your folks/Put down the queens, tell anti-queer jokes/Gay Lib’s ridiculous, join their laughter/The buggers are legal now, what more are they after?” #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #gay #bi #lesbian #trans #pride #tomrobinson #gladtobegay (at London, United Kingdom) -- source link
