crystalwon: wolvesperv: lthredge: February 7, 2009. The Black and White series. If you have not had the pleasure you really need to read The Book of Edge - Being one Leatherman’s journey. I highly recommend it. Download here - http://www.lthredge.com/ What an EXTRAORDINARY gift you have offered to us. I come from the generation that left our successors to fend for themselves. By the time this Gen X boy was coming out, the very last vestiges of mentor ship were fading and the magnetic cohesiveness called AIDS (and many other things before we knew what to call it) had begun to run it’s course…victim to the catastrophic losses sustained by those that would or did survive, volunteer burn out, broken systems, continued lack of adequate funding and the dawn of new “miracle” medications. Since that time I have wondered largely lost as a gay man. I managed to put together a host of friends but they are not who I can turn to and say “Tell me a story. Tell me what it was like” More sadly, I don’t yet know how to be there, how to share the things I learned at the bottom of a bottle of booze and a a few years of really hard lessons as I emerged from my closet an open gay man. It is my most sincere hope that this work is a start….for those that stand beside me or come behind me (and perhaps a bit of folly for those gone before). You see I believe that we can learn from absolutely everyone. To some I can be the example of what to do and for others or on other issues I am the best and most shining example of what NOT to do. They are equally the gifts I have to offer. And you dear sir have renewed my faith and my determination to make it happen some way, no matter how small so that I don’t look back over my shoulder at the landscape of my life and think to myself “If” or “If I’d Only…” done more. I want you to know that I have looked, joked about, hinted at and directly asked about the leather community and how I could be taught/mentored into a lifestyle that I have wanted for as long as I can possibly remember. My generation is not ready to mentor and teach their own is what I discovered. But I think we are reaching the age, collectively, where we will begin to see the opportunity, the gift and the joy waiting if we only take the time to include, share, document, and offer freely to those that want the path easier than we or those that came before us had it.
