fraeya: so happy to share this. So I’m very honored to be part of #ladiesofliterature volume 2 ( linked here if you’d like to check it out ! ) . I chose to illustrate Lettie Hempstock from one of my favourite novels; Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane’. It’s a beautiful story about a young boy who encounters a trio of otherworldly women who live at the end of the lane. It’s written in such a way that it brings the extraordinary into everyday life. It’s poignant, and spellbinding, and sometimes I still see it behind closed eyes. Lettie is one of my absolute favourite characters. She is by all accounts a child, but she’s so much more. She’s the embodiment of something much greater, and while the book hints at her duality, for all intents and purposes she’s an 11 year old girl. Mind you, a rather extraordinary 11 year old girl. Once you’ve been around for a bit, you get to know stuff.“I kicked a stone. “By ‘a bit’ do you mean ‘a really long time’?” She nodded. “How old are you, really?” I asked. “Eleven.” I thought for a bit. Then I asked, “How long have you been eleven for?” She smiled at me. -- source link
