20th-century-man: Since I had nothing else to do this evening (proving, once again, that I have no life…), here’s some information about:The TeddyA teddy, also called a cami-knicker (camisole and knickers) or a step-in, is a one piece garment which covers the torso and crotch and sometimes has short legs. It’s sometimes closed at the crotch with snaps or buttons (though in it’s earliest appearance, it occasionally was open-crotched; not to make it more alluring but for utilitarian purposes.)It first appeared around 1910, but may have first been designed in the late 1800’s. It gained popularity in the 1920’s, when skirts became shorter. It was also popular in the 1940’s during World War II, as more women were wearing trousers. It declined in popularity in the late 1940’s after the war ended. It appeared again in the 1960’s but more as lingerie rather than the practical undergarment it had originally been. The photos (from the top):From an advertisement in the 1940’s / This is similar in design to the teddies or cami-knickers that had been around since the early 20th century. From the 1930’s / more similar to our modern concept of the teddy.Bettie Page / from the 1950’s.Sally Todd / Playboy’s Playmate of the Month, February 1957 / photo by David Sutton.Candy Loving / Playboy’s Playmate of the Month, January 1979 / photo by Dwight Hooker.Black lace teddy, 1979 / This is more the way we think of a teddy today.Donna Mills / photo by Harry Langdon, 1985.Morgan Fairchild / photo by Harry Langdon, 1995. -- source link
