Yesterday, I took a brief break from the beautiful (and I mean beautiful - 60 degrees!) weather to attend the Lincoln Remembrance Day, sponsored by The Lincoln Society and held at the year-old Lincoln Depot Museum in Peekskill, NY. Remembrance Day commemorates our 16th president’s brief stop in Peekskill, NY, on February 19, 1861, as part of his Inaugural train ride from Springfield to Washington, DC. The event was fun in that way that historical reenactments always are, making up for what they lack in attendance with unbridled enthusiasm. From the young couple both dressed as Lincoln to the older man with the t-shirt declaring he’d be more interested in you if you were dead (history jokes - ha!), it was if we had all shown up to root for our favorite sports team and the quarterback happened to be a long-dead president from the 1800s. My happy place, tbh.Lincoln’s speech was shorter than I expected it to be, but I suppose that was always the case with him (I’m thinking of you, David Bachrach at the Gettysburg Address). Afterwards, we all shuffled inside to look around the museum and eat the most amazing cookies I have ever seen. I had been to the Lincoln Depot Museum once before and was struck by how well done it is. The people in charge really care about it, and you can tell they’re passionate about the subject matter. John Testa, the president, gave a speech before introducing the guest lecturer for the day, and talked about all the plans they have for the upcoming year. More lectures, more events, and a focus on women in the Civil War! It made me really excited. I hope to be back there soon. -- source link
