“The Chinese Question” by Thomas NastOriginally published in Harper’s Weekly on February 18, 1871Coolie, Slave, Pauper, and Rat-Eater.The Chinaman Works Cheap Because He is a Barbarian and Seeks Gratification of Only the Lowest, Most Inevitable Wants. The Lowest and Vilest of the Human Race.Importation of Chinese Barbarians into the Country Must Be Stopped by The Ballot or The Bullet. They Are Dishonest and False, Vicious, Immoral and Heathenish. If you were raised in North America or any European-colonized place, this is the view of Chinese people that you have inherited through lifelong socialization, whether you are aware of it or not. Even if it has been flipped into the “model minority” stereotype, it’s a flip side of a racist coin. Even if you consider yourself – like the White Lady Liberty above – a Saviour and Protector of the Huddled Chinese Masses and Brave Adopter of Poor Chinese Babies. In the US, the Chinese Exclusion Act was fully repealed in 1965 – only a few years before I was born. -- source link
