odinsblog:fuckyeahmarxismleninism:Today in history: August 29, 2005 - Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans. Katrina’s storm surge caused 53 different levee breaches in greater New Orleans, submerging eighty percent of the city. The storm surge also devastated the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, making Katrina the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the U.S. The confirmed death toll is 1,836, mainly from Louisiana (1,577) and Mississippi (238), with 135 people still categorized as missing in Louisiana. Images of masses of mostly Black people abandoned by the government in New Orleans, the Bush administration’s criminally inept response and the media’s racist portrayal of Black people surviving in Katrina’s aftermath exposed the deadly effects of structural white supremacy and national oppression in the U.S.Via Freedom Road Socialist Organization (Fight Back!)Never forget that George Bush actually commended his FEMA Director, Michael Brown, for doing a “good job” handling the abysmal response to Katrina. Bush has some nerve returning to the scene of the crime ten years later And, an interesting sn: remember that infamous picture of Bush looking out the window of Air Force One at a flood ravaged New Orleans? guess where he was headed? to get a photo op of giving a birthday cake to John McCain. Literally flying over New Orleans - and not stopping - to go pose with cake while black people were dyingiMho, the most astute political statement Kanye West ever made was when he said, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” -- source link
