A Roman military diploma, ca. 80 CE. This document, made of bronze, verified that soldiers had served in the Roman military and had received citizenship in the Roman empire as compensation. Becoming a Roman citizen allowed a soldier to pay fewer taxes and enjoy better legal rights; the veteran’s children would also become citizens. The Roman army served as an important path up the social ladder for much of the empire’s history.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
