OH HEY IT’S MARS AND HE HAS A CHARACTER SHEET NOW. EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW. <3Full disclosure, Mars is a) a Quantum Leap motherfucker who gets shoehorned into everything I’m interested in and b) everything people told me not to do when I was 14. Ergo, he has some traits that some might consider to be “Sue-ish”. If you don’t like that, no problem! Just blacklist #mars volta (oc) and you’ll never have to see him again. ( b ._.)b So, about this guy and his Quirk.Mars has been a therapist at UA for the last five years, and he’s very dedicated to it. His Quirk lends itself very well to his work; Mind’s Eye is ideal for conveying new concepts to people who might be set in their ways with a negative pattern of thought or otherwise struggling to see outside of their own point of view, and this is usually where Mars employs his Quirk the most. He’s a good speaker and storyteller with a good deal of charisma anyway, but Mind’s Eye really helps to drive home the things he says, especially when it’s compensating for his sometimes-imperfect Japanese. People always know what he means, even if he doesn’t always know all the words he needs. It’s very useful! However, there’s quite a degree of plausible deniability when it comes to Mars’ Quirk. To someone who doesn’t know about Mind’s Eye, it can easily seem as if Mars isn’t using a Quirk at all and is actually just particularly good at explaining things, and this is largely because of the way Mind’s Eye actually works: namely, it’s a form of telepathy that essentially hijacks the input to a target’s brain and introduces the information as Mars sees it. The brain is handily tricked by such things, and unless one is aware that a Quirk is in play, it can be difficult to differentiate between the information being transmitted by Mind’s Eye and one’s own real perceptions. To be clear, he can’t influence people in any other way. Mars can’t force anyone to agree with him, for example. It’s not mind control. However, if people don’t know about his Quirk while they’re being influenced by it, it can be all too easy for them to believe that they’re reaching these conclusions on their own and be swayed by him that way. It’s hard to argue with ideas and perceptions when they feel like they’re coming from inside your own head, and for this reason, Mars is always very particular about disclosing his Quirk when he’s working with people and giving them a choice about whether he uses it during their sessions or not, even if he only ever intends to use it very, very lightly. As such, in his everyday work, Mars typically only ever uses his Quirk at its very lowest intensity. At this low level of intensity, it’s just enough to get ideas across clearly and prevent misunderstandings, and Mars has a reputation for cutting through bullshit to get his point over with no nonsense because of it. When Mars explains something, people know exactly what he’s trying to say without really having to think about it very much, and he sheds his good moods like perfume whenever he enters a room and greets everyone.Mind’s Eye is active at this level pretty much all the time. At this point, Mars is so used to using it that it’s more effort for him to stop - his colleagues who know him well will tend to notice when they can’t read him as plainly as they normally can, which typically only happens when Mars isn’t feeling great and wants to keep it to himself. There’s likely a problem if Mind’s Eye isn’t at least a little active at any given time. However, after a lifetime of using and developing his Quirk, there’s a lot more that Mars can do with it than everyday things such as these. He’s an intelligent and creative fellow, and over the years, he’s taken Mind’s Eye and worked it into something potentially quite powerful. Using Mind’s Eye for making himself understood in conversation is like taking a gentle stroll for Mars - he can do it all day long if he wants to with no trouble at all, and can use it to influence many people at once as long as they’re within earshot of him - but with a little effort, he’s capable of doing a great deal more than that, and this is where The Weirdness starts to occur. With an uptick in intensity, Mind’s Eye comes through more directly and more clearly to the folks listening to Mars speak, and although there is still some plausible deniability here, it’s harder to appeal to it. Some jarring things start happening if Mars puts in a little effort: those who hear him describing something might see places in their own mind’s eye that they’ve never visited, see the faces of people they’ve never met, hear music they’ve never listened to. It’s all just slightly too vivid to be imagination, but some people have a knack for storytelling like that. One could assume, if they didn’t know about Mar’s Quirk, that he’s just very, very good at describing things. Additionally, if one is paying attention, this is also where the lipsync errors start happening. At this stage, if he tries, Mars can use Mind’s Eye to say one thing out loud and have the people who hear him understand something completely different. Mars may clearly speak one word or phrase, but, with his Quirk, he can cause someone to mentally parse what he’s said as another, different word or phrase - a handy trick if he needs to share something with them without being overheard by anyone else, who, if he isn’t targeting them, will only hear the words Mars actually, physically said. Likewise, if Mars is recorded, things conveyed by Mind’s Eye won’t appear in the recording. This level of intensity is like powerwalking for Mars. He can keep it up for a good while without much trouble, and although he can’t influence quite as many people as he can at lower levels, it’s still more than enough to cover, say, a good sized auditorium. However, if Mars takes his Quirk up another notch, to what might be considered a jogging pace, all plausible deniability about there being some kind of Quirk in play goes flying squarely out of the window. This is the stage at which all kinds of audiovisual dickery starts happening, and Mars tries not to do this very often unless he really has to, because people tend not to like it very much. It’s sometimes quite frightening, especially if one isn’t expecting it. Examples of things that might occur while Mars is using Mind’s Eye at this mid-to-high level of intensity include but are not limited to: Mars quotes you directly. You hear him say your words in your own voice, as he heard them. Mars is clearly speaking English but you hear Japanese because that’s what you understand. Mars describes an outfit, and if you’re watching his face while he’s talking about it, you’ll start to see him wearing the outfit he’s describing until you actually look down at his clothes directly.Mars describes a place, and if you aren’t paying attention to your surroundings, you will be there.“HOW DID YOU JUST SAY THAT WITH YOUR MOUTH”Obviously, Mars can’t keep this up for extended periods of time, and may only be able to influence a classroom full of people at once.If he wants to go at a full sprint, however, that focus has to be narrowed down to one or two people, maybe three at a stretch, if they’re all standing very close together, and he can’t maintain it for very long. This is probably for the best, given that, at its most intense, Mars’ Quirk becomes incredibly direct and conveys his mind’s eye with tremendous clarity, which can be terrifying even if one knows what to expect. At this point Mars can and often will divorce Mind’s Eye entirely from what he’s saying and can essentially force whatever he’s visualising directly into his target’s head with all the authenticity of their own perception. It is not very nice, and Mars will typically only resort to this if he’s backed into a corner and has no other option short of physical violence, which he will always try to avoid if possible. He hasn’t had to do this in recent years, but there was an incident some time ago wherein Mars, with combat ability only slightly greater than that of a normal human being who works out quite a bit, faced down a small-time villain to protect some bystanders. Knowing that this villain couldn’t possibly guess the nature of his Quirk, Mars essentially bluffed him, playing off the fact that he has big, scary-looking horns that people tend to assume are connected in some way to his abilities. In short, he did a lot of posturing and loud, scary chanting and made himself out to be something demonic and terrifying. With Mind’s Eye at its most intense and direct, he was able to force those visions of himself upon the villain he was facing and frightened him so much that he backed down and surrendered without a fight. Such visions are difficult to distinguish from reality if you aren’t aware of what’s really happening, and they’re really only limited by Mars’ imagination, but if the villain had called his bluff and challenged him in combat, Mars would have never beaten him. As for Mars’ horns - along with his stocky build and a few other traits - they’re all that he inherited of his mother’s Quirk, one of those weird heteromorphic type Quirks that affects someone at a physical level. In short, Mars is basically part cow; hence, he’s strong and builds muscle easily, and although he’d be no match for someone with a combat-orientated Quirk, he’s certainly able to overpower the average human being. His senses of smell and hearing are also well above those of the average person, although they’re not as keen as those of a dog or a cat, or even a real cow, for that matter. (These heightened senses do come at a cost, however. Mars’ expanded smell and hearing take up space in his brain, and as a result, his eyesight is quite poor, thus the necessity for glasses, and he suffers from some ADHD-esque symptoms such as problems with focus and memory, and has some difficulty sleeping. While Mars does very well when it’s just him and one or maybe two or three other people in his office, there are far too many distractions for him to function well whilst managing a whole class, and this is why, despite how good his Quirk would be for teaching, he can never be a teacher. UA teachers who have had to ask him to cover their classes for them in a pinch generally come back to find that, although their students have certainly learned something from Mars, it will be, at best, only somewhat related to the intended lesson plan.)(Also, sometimes the cow jumps out, just a little. For the most part, Mars is a perfectly upstanding human being, but every now and then, the cow jumps out, most notoriously in the very low, deep “mm” noise that Mars makes when he wants to let someone know he’s listening to them without interrupting them.) While he’s working, Mars is very gentle and attentive, and cares a great deal. He’s always keen to find effective, supportive solutions to the students and faculty who come to him with problems, and is very emphatic about encouraging them to love and be kind to themselves and others, as well as teaching them the skills they’ll need to continue being kind to themselves when times are tough. As a therapist, Mars is far more concerned with helping his clients be functional than he is with helping them to be “normal”, and as such, there are only a handful of rules in his office. Things that are allowed in Mars’ office: swearingcryinglooking like a hot messThings that are not allowed in Mars’ office: being uncharitable to yourselfnamecalling of any kind (towards yourself or others) physical violence Even if these rules are broken at any point, Mars will continue to be patient and gentle, and although he doesn’t take any nonsense, it’s difficult to feel like you’re really being told off by him, given that his tendency is generally to offer better, more positive alternatives to undesirable behaviours than to try to punish them.Needless to say, if Mars actually sounds like he’s angry at any point, someone has fucked up egregiously and repeatedly in some terrible and deliberate way, enough so to reach the end of Mars’ considerable tether. Even then, he’s unlikely to raise his voice more than one does when he speaks sternly. It’s best to take him seriously when this happens. Despite all of this, though, Mars’ colleagues have found over the years that it’s infamously difficult to actually get to know him. He’s very friendly and always ready to lend a hand, but always seems to find ways to politely excuse himself if he’s invited out for drinks and seldom ever talks about himself in anything more than the most superficial ways - nobody besides Principal Nezu even knows where he came from, besides the very broad non-answer of “England”, or what he’s doing in Japan in the first place, and Nezu seems very content to keep the information to himself. Needless to say, everyone has their own theories, but it’s generally accepted that Mars is just a very private person who is too busy to hang out very often. He is, after all, always on call; he has a separate phone just for students to call or text him on if they need to at any time of the day or night, and is very particular about making himself available to those who need him at all times. If he were to wander too far or get into too much mischief, someone who needed him might not be able to reach him, or he might not be able to reach them, and then nobody would be happy. It’s mentioned, occasionally, that Mars might be less busy if he’d stop running the extracurriculars he holds after school. Three nights a week, Mars hosts a dance class - Monday, Wednesday and Friday - and Saturday night is poetry club. He’s been doing this for years at this point and has no intention of stopping, not least because it warms his heart so much to see the students having some low-stakes fun and making friends outside of their own classes. Also, this is a lot longer than I intended it to be, so if you want to know anything else about Mars, you’re going to have to ask. <3 -- source link
