Every spring around equinox, we organize a work party at the Downtown Intercultural Gardening Society (DIGS) to clean up the plots after winter, top off boxes with fresh soil, trade seeds, eat sandwiches, catch up with one another, and generally get started on the new gardening season. I’m proud to say this is our 5th year since we started the project and it’s going stronger than ever.About 50 people showed up this weekend to lend a hand and the work went quickly. I didn’t take many pics this year because I was busy shoveling and socializing. I was happy with the beautiful kale plants I found in my raised bed (top pic), which I planted last year and simply left alone all winter. I also had some beautiful collards growing in my other box. I harvested probably 5 pounds of leafy greens and the season hasn’t even started yet. In the coming days and weeks, I’ll get my seeds in the ground and kick off another year of growing food. -- source link
