Armenia, USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Cotton picking. between 1930 and 1940 Cedits: Universal History Archive In 1922 Russia’s leaders created a new nation, - the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or the Soviet Union. At first, the Soviet government grouped Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan together into one political unit. It was called the Transcaucasian Socialist Republic. Yerevan was Soviet Armenia’s capital city. The countries of Central Asia accounted for 21% of the total agricultural production of the Soviet Union. The cotton production was totally concentrated in Central Asia. Armenia was more focused on the production of fruits and vegetables, but it’s climate and soil gave an undisputed advantage to the latter. Today Armenia does not produce cotton.
