On May 1st, 1851, The Great Exhibition opened at the Crystal Palace located in London’s Hyde Park. This 5-month event was the first exhibition to showcase manufactured goods from all over the world. It was organized by Henry Cole, Prince Albert, and Queen Victoria. We have three peep shows (also known as tunnel books) that describe the Great Exhibition. These peep shows have layers that can be folded out in an accordion-like manner so that viewers can look through a hole on the cover of the book and see the multiple pop-ups within. The first two images show the cover and the interior of one of our peep shows. The last two images show objects seen at the Great Exhibition.
