A quilted square honoring Keaton Otis for the SJSA Remembrance Project by @violetsbuds. #repost @violetsbuds: Finished the remembrance quilt piece for @sew4justice_sjsa today! Keaton Otis was only 25 when he was murdered by police in Portland, OR on May 12, 2010. His friends and family have held monthly vigils in his honor for the past 10 years. The portrait in the center appears on the banner displayed during the vigils. The family’s continued dedication to push for #justiceforkeaton inspired the design of the block. It was truly an honor to work on this piece, and I hope it brings Keaton’s loved ones comfort knowing he has not been forgotten. If you have sewing or embroidery skills, a dedication to social justice, & are interested in volunteering @sjsacademy could use your help! More info on their page. SJSA Remembrance Project is a quilt block community art project that will provide activist art banners for local and national activist organizations who have requested creative statements to be publicly displayed that represent solidarity as well as remembrance. This partnership will create a visual statement to memorialize those who have been unjustly murdered by police, racial vigilantism, or as a result of their gender, sexual orientation and other forms of identity politics. These artivism blocks will honor the lives of individuals through symbolism and portrait. Their names and identities will be displayed during community activism events reminding the world that their lives mattered. https://www.instagram.com/p/CEAXJCvhMNe/?igshid=1m9b1gffxyz1p -- source link
