Gender: FemalePod: N/APlace of Capture: Avacha Gulf, Kamchatka, RussiaDate of Capture: September 26, 2003Age at Capture: Approx. 6 years On September 26, 2003, a group of around 30 whales were netted in Avacha Gulf, just off the southwest coast of Kamchatka, Russia. These were the very first whales netted in Russian waters. Only one female was kept, while another female became extremely distressed, tried to escape, but drowned after becoming entangled in the nets. A second whale of unknown gender also became tangled in the nets, but it is unknown if this whale survived. The unnamed female was kept in a sea pen for a number of days until she was transferred to the Utrish Dolphinarium on October 5, 2003. Unfortunately, on October 19, 2003, the female died due to Bacterial Pneumonia after just 13 days in captivity.
