isquirtmilkfrommyeye: In 1992, Nintendo held an event called the “Nintendo Campus Challenge.” Nintendo traveled to 35 collages spread all over the US to hold this competition. Much like the more famous Nintendo World Championships, players competed in timed versions of popular games to get a combined score. The winner at each location won a Super NES Super Set with Super Mario World, F-Zero, and Pilotwings. Consolation prizes of $100, $75, and $50 were awarded to second, third, and fourth place contestants. The winner of the whole US competition won $10,000 and each winner was put into a drawing to win $5,000. Similar competitions were held in Europe and Japan in 1992. The winner of the US competition, Jeff Hanson, won against the winner of the Japanese competition, Yuichi Suyama, and became the World Champion at the 1993 Consumer Electronics Show. There isn’t a whole lot of memorabilia from the Nintendo Campus Challenge which makes these cups a little special. Apparently, everyone was asked to throw their cups away at the door and very few made it out of the event. -- source link
