smooth-mccrimmonal:Classic and EU Who Appreciation Week Day 3: A Favourite Classic Series Companion “You know, I was always rather fond of Jamie.”Hello, I’m Highlander trash. Let me tell you why.Jamie McCrimmon is short-tempered, possessive, blunt as hell total sweetheart. He doesn’t have a mind for tactics or gadgets or analysis, but also doesn’t need any of those things. He adapts insanely quickly to a life of travel through space and time. He comes to accept that science is fact, even if he can’t being to understand it. That makes him smarter than a lot of people around today. He knows his limits, casually blowing off a long-winded explanation with ‘oh, aye.’ He doesn’t need to know the details, he just needs to know who’s in trouble. His faith in what he sees and in the Doctor’s expertise allow him to be asset in adventures where others might (understandably) panic and flail. Also, he has hilariously blasé reactions to spaceships and phasers and aliens given that the invention of the light bulb is two hundred years in his future. It’s significant that after one on-screen year of traveling with the Doctor he regularly wears a wristwatch (and a rather fetching button down shirt) and after two he can read. To me, Jamie is important because he represents a type of companion not seen on Doctor Who before this point: a best friend. Having Jamie around amps up the Doctor’s humanity about 35 billion percent, to the point where the Doctor feels comfortable enough to take on a new companion and tries to teach a robot Zoe to love.Jamie starts off being very aggressively male (jumps at action, patronizes Victoria) and winds up being the squishy emotional center of the TARDIS team. I don’t think he ever would have stopped traveling with the Doctor, not because the adventures were too big to quit, or the alien planets were so full of excitement, but because he would never leave his best friend to fend for himself. Jamie knows the Doctor needs someone to watch out for him, while he’s watching out for the universe. And for those reasons he’s my favorite companion. The kilt helps. -- source link
