f0lklure:Photo Sources: fieldstation.net and harperleich.wordpress.com Benjamin Lay was a staunch abolitionist who was known to hollow out Bibles and add pokeberries inside of them. At the 1738 Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Quakers, he plunged his sword into a Bible, allowing the contents to splatter on the faces of slave owners. Pokeberries would go on to become a symbol of blood in the Abolitionist movement. The splattering of blood symbolized the blood of slaves and the price that enslaved blacks would endure if Quakers did not develop a firmer stance against slavery. http://findmeacure.com/2008/12/31/pokeweed/ -- source link
