morbidology: Dominique Dunne was a young actress, arguably most well-known for her role as Dana Freeling, the eldest daughter in the horror movie, Poltergeist. Dominique had began dating John Thomas Sweeney, a cooking hand, in 1981. Their relationship was a turbulent one, to say the least. Sweeney was extremely possessive and jealous. He was prone to bouts of anger during which he would become increasingly violent. On one occasion, he even attempted to strangle Dominique. She finally broke the relationship off in September of 1982. On 30 October, Sweeney appeared at Dominique’s home while she was rehearsing for a movie role with actor, David Packer. Dominique went outside to speak to Sweeney while Packer waited inside. Packer then heard thumping sounds and screams from outside the home and called the police. Sweeney had strangled Dominique outside her own home. She fell into a coma and died five days later. Sweeney was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and served a mere three years behind bars before being released. Her family would refer to the verdict as an “injustice.” -- source link
