These records were salvaged by the Navy off of the battleship USS Arizona after the fires were put out in 1942. Found inside and within the ship’s office, these service booklets were placed in envelopes and sealed to prevent further damage. If you look closely, you can see scorching from the blast surrounding the areas that contain metal fasteners. As the temperature of the metal was raised, the fasteners burned the paper around them. The cover from this service booklet still shows heat marks and has dirt and debris from that day. In some cases, pebbles and sand have been found within the envelopes containing the booklets. The history contained in these marks and with this debris tells a story to which even words cannot do justice. These records are a testimony to the actions and sacrifice shown that day; may we remember it always. -- source link
