1863-project-art:OC-tober: Day 6Tobias Frogenhall - The World Turned Upside DownToby really didn’t expect to get mixed up in some sort of weird proto-anarchist movement. He just wanted to be silly and draw on a portrait of General Fairfax that had been put up in his hometown of York in 1647. Alas, escaping from that led to him, his best friend Godfrey, and an Irish refugee child named Aibhilin joining up with a team of four going by the Lords of Misrule. To backpedal a bit, Toby was a portrait artist working in York before this all started. He grew up there, and he and his childhood best friend Godfrey Byrde often engaged in silly but harmless pranks to confuse everyone in the neighborhood. Toby made money by painting the local nobility and other citizens of note, and in his spare time he worked on developing other artistic skills (namely backgrounds, which he loves griping about). Generally, he and Godfrey didn’t get into too much trouble, but since they attempted the Fairfax thing after York had fallen under Parliamentary control back in 1644 and they had a child with them that could potentially get in trouble due to her heritage, they were planning to skip town for a few days just to be safe and ended up on a much bigger adventure. When Aibhilin arrived in York after the Battle of Marston Moor, Toby was the artist she found. Toby’s portrait of her parents’ murderer sets the plot in motion because Amphilis recognizes the man he drew since it’s so accurate to Aibhilin’s description, and they’re all able to team up from there. Aibhilin also lived in a back room in Toby’s house for three years because she was orphaned and not long after an Ordinance of No Quarter to the Irish was issued. This ordinance likely only pertained to soldiers, but Toby wasn’t taking any chances and so he hid the kid to protect her.Tobias has a Puritan alias; he goes by Goodwood Johnson if he has to pretend to be one for a prank or other lark. (Godfrey gave him the name, and they pretend to be cousins.) -- source link
