During the Second World War, Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels used the belief in the Loch Ness Monster as an example of the stupidity of the British people and as evidence that they were going to loose the war. This assertion may have hurt the feelings of Daily Mail owner Harold Harmsworth, whose paper is creditted with helping to popularise the cryptid in the public’s imagination after the publication of the above faked photograph among other things… And what I meant by my assertion it may have hurt his feelings, I mean that Harmsworth was a vocal supporter of both the British fascist moviement as well as being on good terms with Hitler personally. So yeah, there’s that.In 1941, Italian fascist newpaper Popolo D'Italia attempted to one-up this by claiming that a member of the Italian air force had personally killed the Lock Ness Monster with a direct hit with a bomb, but this story was treated with amusement by the anglophonic press when they got wind of it. -- source link
