The stone spheres of Champ Island (Russia).Champ Island is part of the Franz Josef Archipelago, and is namedafter William C. Champ, the leader of a relief operation thatsearched for Anthony Fiala (of the Fiala-Ziegler Polar Expedition) in1905.The concretions on the island range from a few millimetres to severalmetres in diameter. Some call them “monster marbles” or“footballs of the gods”. It is likely that they formed below thesurface of the sea millions of years ago, and that the dropping ofthe sea level, along with erosion of sedimentary deposits aroundthem, exposed them to the air.The Moeraki Boulders are a similar phenomenon found in New Zealand. -- source link
