I mean, they immediately regretted even allowing Nixon to be investigated after he left(and he was never impeached), and ginned up this elaborate fantasy that explained how he never did anything wrong, and he literally fixed an election, and used FBI and CIA agents to spy on his political opposition, activities he funded through rampant bank-fraud and misappropriation of federal and campaign funds. Oh, and he asked all his underlings to perjure themselves on the stand, which many did. He violated dozens of federal laws, made an absolute mockery of the limits placed on a president and politicians, and yet not only did the Republicans prevent him from serving any jail time, and pardon him immediately for the violations they allowed him to be on the hook for, you talk to one about it now and they’ll explain to you how it was all a “liberal hitjob” and how Nixon was the REAL victim in the whole affair, persecuted by unprincipled Democrats who were “playing politics”. By, you know, thinking our elections should be free and fair and not undermined by presidents using their office to bully and harass the candidates running against their party, like tinpot dictators do. Oliver North was the front man for Reagan’s plan to sell weapons to Iran(who were at the time holding US hostages) to fund drug-running death-squads opposed to a democratically elected reformist government in Nicaragua. How did the Republicans punish him for that? By making him a martyr and giving him a show on Fox News. Reagan was never even touched for it; he just gave a ridiculous speech where he said he didn’t “feel” like he had done those things, even though all the evidence pointed to him doing them, and he was let off scott-free.Republicans don’t care about competence any more than they care about legality.
