The Chinese 7.62x39mm Bren Light Machine Gun,When Communist forces took over China in 1950, the new Chinese Communist Government found itself in possession of large quantities of Bren light machine guns, most left over after World War II. These included British models, Canadian Inglis models, and the ZB-26, the Czech forerunner of the Bren Gun. As a fellow communist country, China was heavily supplied by the Soviet Union with arms and ammunition. Thus the standard Chinese infantry cartridge would become the 7.62x39mm cartridge. However most Bren guns in Chinese possession were in either 8x57mm (standard Chinese caliber during WWII) or .303 British. The Chinese, who were always in need of arms for their massive military, didn’t want to scrap their old Brens. Thus in the mid to late 1950’s the Chinese Government conducted a campaign to rechamber their Brens for 7.62x39. This was done by reboring the barrel and inserting a 7.62 caliber sleeve. The Bren was further modified by changing the magazine well to accept detachable magazines from the AK-47 assault rifle and later the Type 56, which was a Chinese AK variant. -- source link
