newwavefeminism: I’m reblogging this because the commentary was LITERALLY genius. I’ve thinking about this all week and couldn’t put it in words. gadgetry: Without a doubt the most frustrating thing about discussing privilege vs. oppression with people like this is the conflation of oppression with personal misfortune. Oppression is systemic. It operates through a variety of mechanisms, some political and some socio-cultural, some easily visible and some subtle, that interact with one another to restrict the standings of the groups they act against. A lot of these mechanisms are so deeply ingrained and normative that without close inspection, they pass unnoticed. But really examining this dude’s personal misfortunes reveals just how easily we objectify women. His so-called accusers seem to think that the only reason he’d want to hang out with his straight, female friends is if there were carnal desires there. After all, what else are women good for? Being valuable platonic companions? Surely not! Looks like his “lack of privilege” fits neatly into a very typical sexist construct. Funny how that seems to work. And if he’s just a legit creep and constantly acts like one around women, that doesn’t do much to disprove my point. Superficial observations do not constitute a real argument against your privilege, bastien-fils. -- source link
