cleopatrasdaughter:ANCIENT HISTORY MEME / events [1/10]THE MURDER OF JULIUS CAESAR MARCH 44 BCE ~ Popular myth, perpetuated in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, suggests Caesar’s murder was a patriotic act (as to quote ‘Brutus’ - “show yourselves true Romans”) against tyranny. But modern scholarship has taken a whole new approach to this myth.Michael Parenti is one of these scholars. In his scholarly work, The Assassination of Julius Caesar, he puts forth that Julius Caesar and countless other political leaders in the late Roman republic are remembered as tyrants and usurpers because the historians from whom we’ve gotten most of our Roman history were all upper-class and bourgeois. Parenti argues that Caesar and these other politicians were in fact populist reformers “whose biggest crime was going against the economic and political interests of Rome’s wealthy and powerful.”hot take -- source link
