Russian Ingenuity — The Korovin Submachine GunQuite possibly the greatest example of Russian ingenuity and perseverance, the Korovin SMG was a simple, cheap, and hastily put together weapon created in desperation as the Nazi war machine drove into the heart of the motherland. It design was a simple and common open bolt blowback design, and it was chambered for the 7.62x25mm cartridge. Most of the firearms is made from simple stamped metal that was spot welded together. No bells, no whistles, just a simple and cheap submachine gun.The most amazing thing is the story of why this gun was produced. At the time the city of Tula (located a short distance south of Moscow) was under siege from the German Army. Tula was one of the major weapons manufacturing centers of the Soviet Union, and there worked a gun designer named Korovin. With a lack of reasources due to the siege, Korovin hastily put together this design. They were manufactured with whatever materials the factory workers could get their hands on. The gun was never even officially tested or approved, they were simply put together and sent to combat (Tula workers even delivered them to soldiers on the front lines). They are unmarked and no records of their manufacture were kept, so it is unknown how many were made. Fortunatly due to the resiliance of the Russian people, combine with overstreached German supply lines and the onset of winter, the Soviets were able to beat back the Nazi’s. -- source link
