On dark winter nights in northern Japan, beware the the Yuki Onna. A ghostly woman who wanders the white wastes in a pale blue kimono, her skin smooth and glistening like snow, and her frozen hair the color of clear ice. These snow sirens lure men from isolated villages to freeze, and assume all manner of forms. Yuki Onna range in age and appearance, manifesting as young fey children, etherial adult beauties, and old wizened crones. The tales of the Yuki Onna are as varied as the prefectures from which they come. Some varieties of Yuki Onna, called Yukinko, cradle infants to their breasts as they wander the frigid woods. Yukinko will approach travelers and beg them to save their dying child. Should the stranger take the child they will feel a deep cold overtake them, freezing them solid. Those who have touched the child of a Yukinko are found the morning after terrible storms kneeling in the snow, arms clutched around empty air. -- source link
