I mean, yeah, it was over exaggerated — probably for comedic effect — but let’s face it: the only non-range time we see him being somewhat competent with a gun (that I can recall) was in Probable Cause, and I think at that point, he was just so overcome with rage that he was really on auto-pilot.See also “Boom!” (“I was aiming for his head”) and “A Deadly Affair” (shooting within inches of Kate in order to disable a suspect).I was just about to point those episodes out as examples of Castle’s competence with a gun. In several situations, Castle has proven that he is an above average marksman when using a firearm under pressure. So, it annoyed me, too, when they played fast and loose with that established characterisation in order to get a quick, cheep laugh.Agree, it was stupid and unnecessary and not funny in the slightest. The fact they had to go OOC and mess up his characterisation in the process made it even worse.Idiotic moment.I’m pretty sure this is NF’s influence (like the ad lib with the swinging doors hitting him). I mean, seriously, I love the guy, but let’s give him a little less free reign, eh? Castle isn’t a bumbling fool, let’s stop playing that up.Hmm, to me it read like too pivotal a scene and riff on the old-West showdown trope to come from actor, and I have it pegged as a writer’s fuck-up. Just because Winter has been with the show for a while and has written some good episodes before doesn’t make him immune to errors (I’ve written about other bad writing in that episode in other posts).Either way they should reign that shit right back in when it goes over the top like it did here.Oh, I’m pretty sure the Beckett-to-the-unnecessary-rescue was the writer, but I think NF probably over-fumbled the gun. IDK why but in my head it’s him making the scene sillier than it needs to be. (Probably because of the other ad libs I’ve heard about.) I agree that the whole thing was ridiculous, though, and that’s on the writer.Sure, it’s possible, though I do feel the ad-libs are usually more small-scale or smaller moments than this (the saloon door is a good example). I didn’t really mind Beckett coming to the rescue, but the over-fumbling sort of felt like the unfunny bookend to the scene written earlier in the ep with Castle looking on in awe at the gun-handling (“I want to be like him when I grow up”)- hence why it felt like the writing was off to me. Either way, it was badly handled and executed.I know nobody reads me here but you guys are blaming Nathan and you are forgetting that there is one director too, if the director didnt say anything to change the scene it’s for a reason.I just went with the idea that he wasn’t used to a colt, and beckett had her police weapon -- source link
