It was a famous piece. The work gained worldwide fame when it was 'restored’ by a woman living in the town in 2012.Authorities in the town first thought the incident was done on purpose. It was later learned that the person who made this work was Cecilia Giménez, one of the faithful visitors of the church. Giménez, in interviews with local channels after the incident, said that he did the restoration with the permission of the priest and that he wanted to preserve the painting that was damaged by the humid weather. Giménez left the painting he had been brushing to dry and took a two-week vacation. When She returned, everyone in the world knew about the restoration she had done. -- source link
