jhfrench:Lead poisoning is one of the biggest threats to California condors on the central coast. A small animal like a ground squirrel that has been shot by a rancher provides a tempting meal for a scavenging condor. But if lead bullets have been used, the condor faces a high risk of lead poisoning. And since they scavenge communally, a single contaminated carcass can poison and kill many condors.⠀⠀Ventana Wildlife Society provides free non-lead ammunition to ranchers and farmers in several counties in central California. This kind of work is helping to reduce the impact lead poisoning has on the delicate condor population.⠀⠀Fun fact: the juvenile in this illustration, tag number 711, is named Big Gulp. ⠀⠀This illustration is one of several that will be featured at VWS’s new Discovery Center exhibit. -- source link
