June 4th, 1754, Lt. Col. George Washington builds Fort Necessity in Fayette County, PennsylvaniaIn March of 1754 Washington received orders from Virginia Governor Dinwiddie to investigate French interference with British settlements in the Three Rivers area of Pennsylvania. There Washington and his men clashed with French soldiers Jumonville Glen, now known as the first battle of the French and Indian War.While the Battle of Jumonville Glen was a victory, Washington expected reprisals. He ordered the construction of a stockade fort to guard an intersection of trails leading to different points in the colonies. Unfortunately Washington placed the fort in a very bad strategic position. The next month the French with their Indian allies would lay siege to the fort, eventually forcing Washington and his men to surrender. -- source link
