luddefluff: mapsontheweb:Greater Finland, 1920. For you who don’t speak Swedish the text on the top means “The kingdom of Finland” but now Finland is not a Kingdom but a Republic. Why is it? You see there was an attempt to establish a monarchy in Finland in 1918 known in finnish as “Suomen kuningaskunta” In the aftermath of the Finnish Declaration of Independence from Russia in December 1917 after the Finnish Civil War from January–May 1918, the victorious Whites in the Parliament of Finland considered making a newly independent Finland into a kingdom and creating a new monarchy. The attempt came to naught tho as the elected king from Germany with the ridiculous long name Friedrich Karl Ludwig Konstantin Prinz und Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel, did not even shown. He never even visited Finnland and so never range as king. And the fact that Finnland today would been a monarchy if some German prince cared to show I find extremely funny. -- source link
