lonelier-version-of-you: Hey, autistic Tumblr (or anyone who just likes good autistic representation and/or good trans representation), here’s something exciting that I think more people should hear about! The character in the pictures I shared above is Brooke Hathaway, from the popular British soap opera Hollyoaks. Brooke is autistic, and as it’s recently turned out, they are also nonbinary!Yes, as of last week’s (last week, as of the time I’m posting this, being April 12-April 18 2021) episodes, a new storyline has started for Brooke, where they’re coming to terms with their gender. It’s early days, but the storyline is pretty good so far, and the other characters have mostly been very supportive of Brooke! Their friend Ripley (who is also nonbinary) is helping them come out, and their boyfriend Imran didn’t handle it very well at first, but he’s quickly realised he should accept Brooke for who they are. Also, the actor who plays Brooke, Tylan Grant, is both autistic and nonbinary in real life! Yay for authentic casting! Indeed, every trans character on the show (there are three of them - Brooke, the aforementioned Ripley, and a trans woman named Sally) is played by a trans actor. Pretty cool, isn’t it?As far as I know, this storyline means Brooke Hathaway is the first nonbinary autistic character on TV ever, let alone the first one played by a nonbinary autistic actor. This is really exciting for representation, and I hope we see more characters like Brooke in the future! And if this post has made you interested in watching Hollyoaks, then you can stream it on Hulu in the US! If you’re in the UK, it airs on Channel 4 and E4, and can also be viewed on their streaming site All4. I don’t know of places to watch it in other countries, unfortunately, but if anyone knows any, feel free to share them. -- source link
