Stone Horse Tang Dynasty (618-907)Length 11 ½ inches, 29 cm.This extremely rare stone horse arching its neck downwards to bite at its knee displays a remarkable level of craftsmanship. The hair on the centrally parted mane is finely worked, as are the tassels on the horse’s trappings. Caparisoned horses formed a highly important part of the Tang potters atelier, the horse being of paramount importance both militarily and domestically. This model with the horse biting at its knee is noticeably rare amongst the various models rendered in pottery, however in the rarer medium of stone this seems to be the only one recorded. -- source link
