With a pointy black crest atop its head and a colorful patch on its wings, this Australian species isn’t your typical New York City pigeon. You might think that these physical traits are specific to males looking to attract a mate, but actually females share these characteristics, too. Another fun fact about the species? When alarmed, a whistling sound can be heard as the bird takes flight—it’s a result of air passing through feathers on its wings.
