tobyboi2: The Galley-slave. Cadiz, Spain, 1567 Tried by the Spanish Inquisition for piracy against His Most Catholic Majesty, King Philip, this English seaman was spared the heretic’s fate of being burned alive at the stake and instead condemned to serve as a galley-slave for the remainder of his life. Naked, chained and fearfully alone, he will spend the night in the dungeons below the galley-slave barracks in Cadiz before processing at first light tomorrow. Firstly, he’ll have his scalp and body shaved thus denying lice and other parasites a feeding place and then he’ll be taken to the blacksmith’s forge where the Spanish king’s brand will be seared into his arse and those dreaded accoutrements of slavery - the heavy, iron collar and the ankle and wrists cuffs - will be chained around his neck and limbs. Finally, he’ll be assigned a place at the oar and permanently chained to a rowing-bench to begin the hellish existence of an oar-slave. -- source link
