talvatis: The Jokkmokk Winter Market is an annual market event/folk festival that was initiated back in 1605 (so it’s over 400 years old!). It takes place in Jokkmokk, Sweden and (usually) starts on the first Thursday of February. It is very special since it serves as a meeting place for Sámi people from all over Sápmi.Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Jokkmokk Winter Market was cancelled this year. But instead of dropping it completely, organizers have decided to host the Winter Market of 2021 online! There will be live broadcasts from Jokkmokk, a digital market open for browsing, and a lot of unique lectures and performances! This is a great opportunity for people from all over the world to partake in this event, and perhaps learn more about the Sámi people and our culture along the way.The official website can be found at jokkmokksmarknad.se, and you can follow them on facebook and instagram. If you want to learn more about the Jokkmokk Winter Market and it’s history, I recommend looking here and here. The photos show glimpses of previous Jokkmokk Winter Markets.
