chelidonart:The Dead Romans Society - (Dead) BirdsAs some of you might know, I am writing my graduation thesis on Catullus’ influence on Ovid’s Amores and Tristia. Now, the first elegy I analyze in this sense is Amores 2.6, an epicedium (funerary poem) to Corinna’s dead parrot, which I compare to Catullus 3 (Lesbia’s sparrow’s death). Now, serious matters aside, what I love in this comparison is that it says a lot about the differences between the two poets: Catullus chooses a teeny tiny sparrow to focus on his puella’s feelings; Ovid chooses a big-ass, loud parrot to focus on his own poetic fursona persona. What’s not to love in these two? -- source link
