The Libraries and Archives staff is excited to celebrate the Museum’s long history of fostering artists and community with the exhibition, Iggy Pop Life Class by Jeremy Deller, on view until March 26, 2017. Artist Jeremy Deller uses the traditional life drawing class to examine shifting representations of masculinity throughout history. A select group of local artists at various levels of their careers were selected to participate.Brooklyn Museum has always been a place of inspiration, instruction, and fostering the artists and community. Instruction has traditionally taken place through hands on art classes at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences (BIAS) dating back to 1841, Brooklyn Museum Art School (BMAS) courses, and the Museum’s Education Department and Programming. Founded in 1941, BMAS provided instruction for amateur artists until January 1985 when it was transferred to the Pratt Institute’s Continuing Education Division. The Museum’s Archives house the Records of the Brooklyn Museum Art School and often receive requests regarding faculty, courses, exhibitions and photographs. The history of the Art School is detailed through reports, recommendations and letters as it grew from a popular post-WWII educational opportunity into a truly professional art school, albeit one always in need of funding. The Art School’s caliber is perhaps best measured by the faculty it employed – prominent artists such as Max Beckmann, William Baziotes and Reuben Tam all taught at the School and details of their service are included in the files. The artistic direction of the Art School over time is evidenced both through the faculty, the classes offered and through the students accepted for the full-time program, particularly the scholarship winners.Posted by Jennifer NealPhoto by Brooke Baldeschwiler -- source link
