A selection of large format photographs from Lt. Adolphus Greely’s doomed Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881-1884 into the Canadian Arctic. During the expedition a new ‘Farthest North’ record was set. However, out of 21 men, only six would survive the journey. These images were captured by expedition photographer, George W. Rice, who would later fall victim to starvation on the precarious journey home. His lasting images are haunting and reveal the perilous isolation and strangeness of this High Arctic environment, and remind us that it is a territory in which there is no easy return from.More images on Library of Congress. -- source link
